Can I Pretend to be in the da Vinci Code at the Louvre?

August 7, 2011
Today I went to the Louvre and was in fear when I saw that they put up a sign 4.00 hour wait from this point in line.  O.M.G.  I had assumed it would be crowded because it's a free entrance day but I had no idea it would be this bad.  I mean, I got there a half hour before the museum even opened and this was already my fate?  Yikes!  Fortunately, it kept moving and was only about an hour to an hour and a half.  I guess didn't realize free-first-Sunday of the month was this large of a deal!

Behind me in line were three girls that I ended up spending the day with.  Two of them just finished a summer program in Florence and the other was just traveling around for a bit (and was Dutch!)  The two girls who studied in Florence are both from Florida (but didn't know each other before Florence).  They met with the Dutch girl at the hostel they're staying at.  They were really cool and it was nice to have some fellow English speakers!  It also made the line go by a bit quicker!

Now that we finally got inside, the crowd trying to get to the Mona Lisa...

Mona herself!

Many of the corridors and ceilings were really cool too.

And they had Egyptian items!

'Da Vinci Code' anyone??

For the record, there was no rose to be found on the ground either... slight disappointment.

I really enjoyed the museum and after we got some lunch.  After we all departed our ways (I went home to spend some time working) and we exchanged numbers so maybe I will meet them for dinner tomorrow night.

it's supposed to light up, right?

So it is now the middle of my first weekend in Paris.  I'm not going to lie, but this week has been a bit rough adjusting to the time so I really haven't done that much besides work (and get my bearings there), find food and sleep.  With that, I apologize to announce that my first weekend is kind of 'lame'.  I figure I have two months to explore so I'm not too worried.  The weather has been not so nice either, so good 'working weather'.  Also, I've got a lot of work to be doing for stuff back...

a french keyboard and computer

August 5, 2011
So I have been switching rather frequently throughout the day between my computer and my work computer and in result, can't seem to type at a normal speed because of the difference of keyboards.  On the French keyboard, I am typing q instead of a z instead of w and , instead of m and vice versa.  Ah!  I have also never seen so many red lines in a word document either because of the language.  I seriously am not sure sometimes now if I'm spelling all of my words correctly.

Next week I get to wo...

dutch dozen and french fifteen

August 2, 2011
So I have been reminded that I have lacked on posting in the past few days.  My sincere apologies.  I have been very busy given it is my first week at work and next week my boss will be gone so I am trying to prepare to have enough things to do next week while she is gone.

The office is on the same floor as another space-related company and it is really dead.  Everyone is on vacation and you can tell when I'm riding the metro there are tons and tons of tourists.  Nonetheless, there are three o...

day one of work

August 1, 2011
The little things in life: I got to work without a problem at all!!!! I'm so incredibly proud of myself for this.  I left an extra hour early just to be sure (based on my previous experience) but it was not needed at all!  Fortunately it was a nice day so I just found a bench to sit on which was perfectly fine.  Ok, so I exaggerated that a bit - but my only problem this morning was trying to buy a ticket when the machine didn't have an English option... A lady was kind to help me though.

The o...

bonjour Paris!

July 31, 2011
FOR THE RECORD: I have one suitcase with me - yep, I did it - packed my 2 1/2 months of life into one bag. (well, plus a carry-on) but still.  This is typically not possible for me.

During my flight I sat next to a girl from Germany who is studying law.  She was very nice and also ended up needing to take the same train I needed and was very nice to let me tag along until I got to my stop.  She gave me a few pointers about the city too.  She studied here for the last year and her mother also l...

one week of minnesota

July 31, 2011
My week home was a bit of a whirlwind with lots of things to do.  I got home on a Thursday and the next day I headed up to our cabin in Aitkin with my parents and aunt and uncle to prepare for my brother-in-law's surprise 30th birthday party to be on Saturday.

My sister is a maniac planner too, but in the end it turned out to be a great weekend.  The whole time he thought I was having a welcome home party but we got him!  My sister and mom surprised me too by getting some of my friends to com...

the last lunch

July 19, 2011
Last night a group from the Uni went out for drinks which was nice.  It has finally stopped raining too! (but I don't want to jinx it...)

My last day at work at the Uni is today, Tuesday.  Another very sad day.  It was also my last lunch at the canteen with everyone.  Here, I can carry around my Nutella jar and a loaf of bread and make a sandwich at the table, and there is about an 80% chance that someone at the table on both sides of me is doing the same - if not with Nutella, with sprinkles....

my last weekend in leiden

July 18, 2011
A very sad time, it is now Monday and my last weekend in Leiden is now over.  It was definitely a great one though!

Friday was very very busy at work.  I have never biked home so fast either as I ended up staying until almost seven.  For dinner, we headed to Marissa's and made a typical Portuguese dinner called bitoque.  After a failed effort at good Portuguese food in Belgium, Marissa wanted us to try the real stuff.  It was delicious too!

Everyone enjoying our Portuguese dinner (Maya is takin...
